Music
Liverpool claims to be the Britain's capital of pop music. Manchester has some serious claims to that crown and has produced some of the country's most influential artists and groups over the last 50 years. To name just a few of Manchester's musical sons will never do the city's musical history but here goes anyway:

The 1980s was arguably the seminal decade for music in Manchester. From Tony Wilson's Factory Records signed bands such as The Happy Mondasy, New Order and Joy Division to The Smiths led by Morrissey and Marr and The Stone Roses and James. It was Manchester where indie met dance and manifested itself as Madchester, centred around the world famous Hacienda nightclub.

More recently it is groups such as Elbow, Oasis, Doves and even Take That who have carried the mancunian musical flag.

There are a number of live music venues across central Manchester:

Manchester is a mecca for many sports, not least being the host city to 2 of the biggest premier league football clubs in the country, as well as Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic being just a few miles outside of Manchester. Manchester is also the home to Old Trafford Cricket ground where Lancashire County Cricket Club ply their trade. Football

Manchester United

Manchester United are arguably the biggest football club in the world, and certainly the most successful football club in England since the inception of the FA Premier League. Home games are played at the 75,000 capacity Old Trafford stadium which is also known as The Theatre of Dreams, and situated near Salford Quays.

Manchester City
rn Many Manchester City fans would claim that it is their club that is the heartbeat of Manchester. Historically a less successful club than Manchester United they still attract crowds of more than 40,000 to their City of Manchester stadium in the Eastlands area of East Manchester – a stadium that was originally built for the spectacular Commonwealth Games of 2002 – for their Premier League home games.

Manchester City has recently been taken over by the Royal family of Abu Dhabi and they are now reputed to be the richest club in world football. They now plan to challenge Manchester United dominance in their quest for silverware.
