A bit of history:

The city of Liverpool dates back to 1207 when King John found a place from where he could easily get to Ireland. John had originally been given the Lordship of Ireland by his father, Henry II. A charter was signed and eventually a castle was built to protect the port. This port was Liverpool. Thus the city of Liverpool was born. From a tiny fishing village at the beginning of the Thirteenth Century, Liverpool became a thriving port emerging as the second city of the British Empire. Liverpool became rich trading with the Americas, the Far East and Africa in, amongst other things, textiles, sugar and people. From being the Music capital of the world during the 1960’s Liverpool's economic decline towards the end of the millennium is well documented. Now, the city has re-emerged stronger and fitter. Liverpool is thriving with international visitors as well as investment from International business. Liverpool is a truly magnificent city jam packed with history and culture, bursting with energy, pride and humour. The list of stuff for you to do when you visit Liverpool is endless, whether you are a lover of Culture, music or sport.

Culture

The legacy of wealth from the times of the Victorians and Georgians can be seen in the buildings that they built all over Liverpool. Liverpool has more listed buildings than anywhere in the UK, outside of London. Some of the architecture is truly awe inspiring. Liverpool also has more museums and art galleries than any other city in the country. for a full list go to www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk It begins to become clear why Liverpool was the obvious choice as European Capital of Culture 2008. The famous waterfront is dominated by the Three graces that stand side by side and look out across the Mersey, made up of The Liver Building; Cunard Building and the offices of the Mersey docks and harbour board. Be dazzled by their imposing grandeur as you cross the River Mersey on one of its famous ferries. From the pier head you can check out the thriving Grade 1 listed Albert Dock, now home to some of Liverpools favourite visitor attractions including:

  • Tate Liverpool
  • The Beatles story
  • International slavery museum
  • Merseyside Maritime museum

Towards Lime St you will be able to see the neo-classical, Grade 1 listed St. Georges Hall, often described as The Jewel of the North, the stunning Walker Art Gallery and World Museum Liverpool. From there go and see the citys 2 famous cathedrals. Yes, Liverpool has 2 cathedrals. The Anglican cathedral, which is the biggest in the country, and The Metropolitan Cathedral being the most unusual. It’s known locally as Paddy’s wigwam, and you will see why! Amongst other buildings well worth checking out are The Chinese arch in Liverpool’s Chinatown, the biggest of its kind outside of China; and the rows of beautiful Georgian townhouses throughout the Georgian Quarter in between the cathedrals. There are many venues to catch a show. The main theatres are listed below. Check out the individual websites for the most up to date listings:

It is also worth visiting the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) on Bold Street (www.fact.co.uk), commissioning exhibitions and championing new forms of creativity.

Music

Ok, so music could easily be filed under Culture, but in Liverpool, music deserves its own category. The list of bands to come out of Liverpool is impressive: from The La’s; Echo and the Bunnymen; The Farm; Frankie Goes to Hollywood; Shack; and The lightning Seeds. Most recently it has been The Coral (who are actually from the other side of the water, Hoylake on the wirral) and The Zutons who have been setting the standard and redefining the scene. But it was in the 1960’s that Liverpool emerged as the Music capital of the World, with number 1’s from acts such as Gerry and The Pacemakers; The Searchers; Billy J Kramer; and of course The Beatles. The Beatles not only changed the lives of millions of their adoring fans, they not only defined an era, they defined modern culture. The Beatles were not just a group of 4 young lads from Liverpool, but the biggest cultural phenomenon the world has ever seen. Bigger than Elvis? Yes. Bigger than Jesus? Maybe. Whether or not you are a massive fan of The Beatles you should set aside at least some of your time in Liverpool see some of the historical sites that are intrinsically linked to the Fab Four . Sport

As a sporting city there can be no doubt that Liverpool ranks amongst the best in the world, both in terms of the quality and the diversity of the sport on offer – to the sporting spectator as well as the sporting participant.

Football

If ever there was a city divided by its passion and loyalty to 2 football teams then that city is Liverpool. Football is a religion. The 2 teams in question are Everton FC and Liverpool FC. Everton FC, the original Mersey millionaires and a club steeped in history have won the English League title on 9 occasions, the FA Cup 5 times as well as The European Cup Winners Cup in 1985. Everton play their home matches at Goodison Park, a little over 3 miles from Liverpool city centre. You can find information about the clubs fixtures as well as stadium tours that are offered by the club at www.evertonfc.com. Liverpool FC have won the English League title on 18 occasions – more than any other club, the FA cup 7 times, and perhaps most famously, the European Cup (now known as The Champions League) on 5 occasions. The most recent of these victories against AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005 when Rafael Benitez’s team came from 0-3 down at half time, to amazingly win the cup on penalties. Possibly the greatest ever sporting comeback? Liverpool play their home matches at Anfield, a little over 3 miles from Liverpool city centre. WE CAN ARRANGE TICKETS AND TRANSPORT FOR VISITORS TO THE HOME MATCHES FOR BOTH EVERTON FC AND LIVERPOOL FC. PLEASE CONTACT US IN ADVANCE TO CHECK AVAILABILITY.

Horse racing

The Grand National is quite simply the greatest sporting showcase on the planet. It is much more than just a horse race, The Grand National is an institution that is watched by the world with baited breath, when millions of betting slips are clutched tightly while up to 40 horses and riders courageously make their way over the famous birch fences (The Chair, Bechers Brook, The Canal Turn to name just 3, there are 16 fences, 14 of them have to be jumped twice. That’s a total of 30 fences to be negotiated during the 2 circuits of the course that make up the race. Power, guts, luck, skill, hope and adrenalin and so much more in a race of four and a half miles. (The record time for the race is held by 1990 winner Mr Frisk and stands at 8 minutes 48 seconds) The most famous of all horses to run at Aintree is Red Rum. In 5 amazing years between 1973 and 1977 Rummy won the race 3 times and came second twice. Red Rum is now buried, quite fittingly by Aintree’s winning post. This race which was first given the title The Grand National Handicap Steeplechase in 1847 is run each year in April at Aintree racecourse as part of a 3 day racing festival.
