Is the Liverpool hotel market really becoming saturated?

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

According to a recent quote attributed to a Director at Sanguine Hospitality Management, the Liverpool hotel market is close to saturation for a city of it’s size.

This is a remarkable statement – not for the fact that is true or otherwise, but more so the fact that if you had stayed in Liverpool only 5 or so years ago (you would have struggled to find a decent hotel in Liverpool) you just couldn’t believe that anybody would be saying such a thing in 2010. It is a stement that goes to show just how much Liverpool has developed as a city over the last few years.

Sanguine are opening Hotel Indigo in Liverpool in the early part of 2011. This is a 151 bedroom Boutique hotel in Liverpool’s commercial district (situated on Chapel Street next to the iconic Unity Building and just a stones throw from St Nicholas’ church on the Strand. This is undoubtedly a fantastic location for a new hotel in Liverpool city centre and will be popular with business people as well as tourists staying in Liverpool for a city break or holiday in Liverpool.

It is fair to say that a number of new hotels have recently opened in Liverpool – including the Liverpool Hilton and Novotel Liverpool centre, and there are other new Liverpool hotels set to open in 2011 and 2012.

If you start to add the number of new hotel beds to the growing number of serviced apartments in Liverpool, you can see that the city now has a good selection of accommodation across the city centre (and occupation rates remain at almost the same record levels as was seen during the 2008 Capital of Culture).

But is it a saturated market?

Chris Rose, Managing Direct at Serviced City Pads – a Liverpool based serviced apartment booking company doesn’t think so. He commented “I think the key missing word from the original quote is “current” and that is an important word relating to the size of the city, in terms of leisure and corporate visitors. Liverpool is becoming a popular tourist destination relying less and less on the visiting supporters of Liverpool FC. The city is also becoming an extremely popular destination for comferences, and that’s highlighted by the recent Lib Dem conference and the recently announced Labour party conference to be held in Liverpool. People’s perceptions of Liverpool have changed dramatically over the last 10 years, and that is good news for Liverpool’s hospitality sector.

With a greater choice of Liverpool hotels (as well as more serviced apartments and other self catering accommodation in Liverpool) this can only be good news for the consumer. It will lead to increased standards across the board and only the best will survice. That’s not a bad thing.

Serviced City Pads is company that is based in Liverpool and sees the changing face of the city on a daily basis. However, we are an outward looking company with thousands of serviced apartments listed across the UK. We deal with companies accommodation requirements in a number of UK cities and will be looking to add hotels to our portfolio in the near future.”

Manchester ready for Labour Party Conference

Friday, September 24th, 2010

As the Liberal Democrats leave Liverpool behind after their Conference, it is the turn of the Labour Party to head to the North West of England and to Manchester where this years Annual Labour Party Conference is given added kudos with the announcement on Saturday of the new Labour party leader. Who is it going to be? It looks like a battle to the line between the Miliband brothers – Ed and David. David Miliband remains the slight favourite, but his younger brother whose socialist leanings have led him to be nicknamed “Red Ed” is catching quick, and it looks like this contest will be a photo finish. Serviced City Pads thinks David is the safer choice, someone who can unite rather than divide the Labour party and feels that it wil be him who is crowned as the new Labour leader in Manchester, with his challenge of toppling an already wobbling coalition government.

High drama indeed. More importantly to Manchester is the fact that with Labour again returning to Manchester in 2010 really cements the city as a premier conference destination. If you were a conference organiser you couldn’t help but be impressed by how Manchester has transformed itself over the previous 10 years, taking over from Leeds as the unofficial “Capital of the North”.

Having the Labour Party Conference in ManchesterIt is also great news for the economy of Manchester. Experts predict that the economy will benefit to the tune of £15 million with delegates making use of the vast array of accommodation in Manchester, with Manchester hotels fully booked as well as service apartments in Manchester being particularly busy.

On top of the direct benefits that Manchester accommodation providers have seen, there are also benefits seen from restaurants and shops in Manchester.

There will also be a ripple effect as more conferences decide to use the excellent facilities that Manchester has to offer.

If you are hosting a conference in Manchester and are interested in staying in a serviced apartment in Manchester or booking a hotel in Manchester, check out the accommodation booking specialist Serviced City Pads.

London Theatre Highlights this Autumn

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Your London visit is not complete without a trip to the theatre, the following plays are showing this autumn in London’s theatre land.Serviced City Pads supply serviced apartments throughout London, please contact the reservations team on 0844 335 8866.
Onassis

The twentieth century was full of larger than life supermen and superwomen, from monsters like Hitler to the saints like Mother Teresa. The Greek super-rich have occupied a particular place in this pantheon, and in his time Aristotle Onassis was the richest and most prominent of all, at least in the eyes of the general public. Just as the Russian proverb says that Moscow ‘is a city without limits’, so the Onassis life seemed to be ‘without limits, in terms of money, sex power and infinate freedom. Onassis seemed to be able to go where he liked, make money beyond the dreams of avarice, sleep with the most beautiful women and influence world events. These threads all converged in his passion for Jacqueline Kennedy.

The life of the millionaire ship-owner also seemed to be peculiarly symbolic, in that he grew up in the chaos of the eastern Mediterranean after the First World War and the 1923 Smyrna Disaster when most Greeks had to leave what is modern day Turkey. It is a horrible overused word, but his path was truly iconic, applied to a man coming from a culture where the family icons were often all that could be carried with you out of the old Asia Minor home after the wreckage of war. His ruthless ambition and overwhelming egotism can be traced to those days, when all he owned as a young man arriving to make his fortune in Buenos Aires were the clothes he stood up in. The play follows his life and loves and is at the Novello Theatre from 30 September until Jan 2011. Serviced City Pads can book serviced apartment accommodation throughout London.Birdsong

Based on Sebastian Faulks international best selling novel, the play tells the story of one man’s journey through an all consuming love affair and into the horror of the First World War. Serviced City Pads have a large range of serviced apartments throughout London.
While staying as the guest of a factory owner the pre-First World War France, Stephen Wraysford embarks on a passionate affair with Isabelle the wife of the host. The affair changes them both for ever. A few years later Stephen finds himself back in the same part of France, but this time as a soldier at the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest encounter in British Military history. As men die around him, Stephen turns to his enduring love for Isabelle for the strength to continue and to save something for future generations.

For the first time, this beautiful and haunting story about love, courage and the endurance of the human spirit is brought to the stage in a version by Rachel Wagstaff. The Birdsong is at the Comedy Theatre from Sept 18 until January 2011.Serviced City Pads supply short and long stay apartments in London.

Whilst in London Visit the Great Moscow State Circus

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

On your visit to London this Autumn the Moscow state circus is in Clapham Common from October 26 – 31 for the London leg of the tour. The Great Moscow State Circus was opened 30 April 1971 which originally performed in Moscow located at the Vernadsky Prospekt, which can seat up to 3,400 people and the height of the amphitheatre is 36 metres. Performances are held each day in the afternoon and evening. The circus has 5 arenas (equestrian, water, illusionist, ice-rink and light effect), located 18 metres below the floor, which can be swapped during the performance.Serviced City Pads reservations team on 0844 335 8866.
Initially the circus building was merely a performance venue. In early 1990’s its own company was formed. It is headed by Leonid Kostyuk, a former circus artist and euilibrist. The former organiser of the circuses in Soviet Russia was Soyuz Gost-Cirk (loosely translated as Russian People’s Circus). Under the Soviet Regime, there were over 70 circus buildings in the Soviet states, as well as a specialist training school system. Thousands of performers worked for the circus organisation. They were all State employees;salaries were no that high in comparison to the West, but employment was secure, and equipment, costumes, travel and accommodation were all provided, as well as a pension upon retirement.Serviced City Pads supply apartments throughout London.
The present company employs several hundred and tours as the ‘Great Moscow State Circus’. The Moscow State Circus is a state owned enterprise. The circus organisation was threatened by the dismantling of the SovieT Union, and by some performers inclination to seek better-pad foreign contracts. In June 2007, an attempt to privatise the building was initiated, strongly opposed by company director Leonid Kostyuk, among many others. Evetually President Vladimir Putin eliminated the building from the short list of state properties to be privatised.

The same name has been used for tours and circus companies selected from Russian resources to appear in the West. The first tour was in 1956, when the Moscow State Circus amazed audiences in Paris and on London. The title now owned and used in the UK by a touring circus owned and run by the Entertainment Coporation. The promotion of the Moscow State Circus started in 1995, taking advantage for the first time of the newly post-Soviet freedom of individual artistes to agree terms and travel abroad. The current circus production consists of a cast of twenty-five performers, including clowns, trapeze artisits, aerial acrobats, jugglers and contortionists. Serviced City Pads supply London Accommodation.Moscow State Circus tickets are now available as the illustrious circus comes to London for the short stay at Clapham Common. With a reputation as one of the finest circus shows in the world, the Moscow State Circus features an array of top class acts and performances that are sure to wow audiences.

Those lucky enough to get there hands on Moscow State Circus tickets will be able to see a feast of top acts, inlcuding the Russian swing, the Edwardian Mystic, Astronov the legendary human cannon ball, Oleysa’s walk on the solo trapeze and Gaucho’s Perfection the Time Show. Serviced City Pads.

Visit Edinburgh Old Town a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Monday, September 13th, 2010

The Old Town of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has preserved its medieval plan and many Reformation-era buildings. Serviced City Pads reservation team on 0844 335 8866.One end is closed by the castle and the main artery, the Royal Mile, actually made up of several distinct streets, leads away from it, down the now-ruined Holyrood Abbey. Narrow closes (alleyways), often no more than a few feet wide, lead downhill on either side of the main spine in a herringbone pattern. Large squares mark the location of markets or surrond major public buildings such as in front of the Tron Kirk, and surrounding St Giles Cathedral and the supreme courts.Short and long stay accommodation in Edinburgh through Serviced City Pads.Other notable places inlcude the Scottish Parliament Building, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, the Royal Museum of Scotland, Surgeons Hall, the University of Edinburgh, and numerous underground streets and vaults, relics of previous phases of contruction. The street layout, typical of old quarters of many northern European cities, is made especially picturesque in Edinburgh, where the castle on top of a rocky crag, the remnants of an extinct volcano, and the main street runs down the creast of the ridge from it.

The topography for the city is known as ‘crag and tail’ and was created during the last ice age when receding glaciers scored across the land pushing soft soil aside being split by harder crags of volcanic rock. The hilltop crag was the earliest part of the city to be develop, becoming fortified and eventually developing into the current Edinburgh Castle. The rest of the city grew slowly down the tail of land from Castle Rock. This was an easily defended spot with marshland on the south and a loch on the North. Access up the main road to the settlement was therefore restricted by means of various gates and a City Wall, of which only fragmentary sections remain.Serviced Apartments in Edinburgh through Serviced City Pads.Due to the space restrictions imposed by the narrowness of the ‘tail’ the Old Town became home to some of the earliest ‘high rise’ residential buildings. Multi-story dwelling were the norm from the 16th century onwards. During the 18th century the Old Town has a population of about 80,000 residents. However, in more modern times it had declined dramatically to just 4,000 residents. There are currently approximatley 20,000 residents in various parts of the Old Town. As the population was for a long time reluctant to build outside the defensive wall, the need for housing grew and hence the buildings became higher and higher. Tragically, many of these buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1824; the rebuilding of these on the original foundations led to changes in the ground level and the creation of many passages and vaults under the Old Town.

On December 7, 2002 another major fire in the Old Town engulfed part of Cowgate. It destroyed the famous comedy club,The Guilded Balloon, and much of the Informatics Department of thr University of Edinburgh, including the comprehensive A1 Library.Serviced City Pads.

Stay in London and Visit the The Mayor’s Thames Festival

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The Mayor’s Thames Festival is London’s free arts festival. Activities take place on the River Thames, the riverside walkways, roads, bridges, docks and public open spaces from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge and beyond. Please contact Serviced City Pads reservations team on 0844 335 8866.
The festival is a stunning, free celebration of London and its river and it has become a key highlight in the city’s cultural life. Its river and water focused activities aim to inspire and excite and its extensive education programme involving some 300 schools hopes to increase interest in and appreciation of the river and its environment.

Many Thames Festival activities are based on public participation. The festival commissions new work, and transforms unusual spaces on and around the River Thames with a mixture of street art performance and carnival atmosphere.

Over the weekend, the Thames Festival Market showcases the very best of smallscale independent designers/makers, complemented by a selection of superlative food providers. Each area of the festival site will have food stalls, arts and crafts traders, and bars serving a variety of refreshments to cater to your every need. Over 300 individual traders have been carefully selected from across the UK, with an emphasis on artisans producing high quality products, and a clear policy on ethical sourcing for produce. Serviced Apartments through Serviced City Pads.

The Steve Faldo Memorial Barge-Driving Race re-enacts the way watermen manoeuvred their barges on the Thames in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when goods from cargo ships were offloaded onto barges, or ‘lighters’, and rowed with long oars to quayside warehouses.

The teams competing in this impressive race require skill and strength tom propel these heavy un-powered vessels and ride the river currents. The main race features barges crewed by modern day waterman and lightermen. who work on boats up and down the Thames from Woolwich to Hampton Court. The earlier race features novice crews, made up of friends, family and apprentices of The Company of Watermen and Lightermen. The race commemorates the captain of the Marchioness, who died along with fifty other when it sank after being run down by a dredger on 20 August 1989. Serviced Accomodation throughout London with Serviced City Pads.
Join Thames21 as they bring the foreshore to life! Thames21, Londons leading waterways charity, will be running a whole host of fun events for people, young and old, on the foreshore by Gabriel’s Wharf. Build a sandcastle, have a go at welly throwing, or find and decorate an interesting pebble to take away with you. All equipment provided, and suitable for veryone. The Environment Agency Fisheries Department will also be down on the foreshore and carrying out live netting demonstrations, to look at some of the fish that live in the River Thames.

‘As an English pyrotechnic artist there is no greater stage than the Thames.’ So says Mike Jones, designer of the Thames Festival fireworks display, now one of only three displays permitted each year on the Thames in central London.

The display spans nearly half a kilometre of the river as the two barges fire sychronised volleys and strafes of aerial shells erupting into a dramatic canopy of effects. Effects are drawn from China, Taiwan, Spain, Italy and America to modulate not only the colour and shape within each sequence, bit also the brilliance, the dynamic movement and pyrotechnic noise as over one ton pyrotechnics are fired in ten minutes.

From amorphous clouds of strobing blink stars and weaving fiery serpents to the perfect parabolic forms of brocade ring shells, we will see a sequence of beautiful pyroscapes creating a cycle from shapeless energy to symetry and then to chaos.
