Apartment accommodation in Leeds close to the City museum.

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

The Leeds City Museum re-opened to the public in 2008 thanks to a successful bid by Leeds City Council for National Lottery money, having been closed for several years beforehand. Now the place has been open again for a while and had a chance to get its feet on the ground and get in the flow of things, it would be a great time to go and visit the museum to enjoy everything there is to offer. Leeds is developing into a modern and culture city so it would be wise to make the most of it and look to stay in Leeds for at least a few days to full appreciate what is to offer.

The museum was first established in 1819 and 2 years later was made open to the public. For over a hundred years it took pride of place in the centre of Leeds on Park Row but it became heavily damaged during the Second World War in 1941 after heavy bombing from the naughty German Nazis. It was closed in 1965 and remained so until recently when the museum moved into the Leeds Mechanical Institute on Millennium Square.

Probably the most famous of the exhibits in the museum is the Leeds Tiger, a stuffed tiger that the curators actually wanted to get rid of, but after a campaign from the Yorkshire Post and much support from the local population, they decided to keep the tiger in the museum as a main attraction.

If you’re heading to Leeds and looking to stay for a few nights and you are tired of the usual hotel options, then why not try booking a Leeds serviced apartment for your stay? With serviced apartment accommodation, you get the use of a whole modern apartment during your stay which gives you much more space on average than a normal hotel room. The serviced apartment sector is rapidly growing as more and more people learn about them and quickly see they are often a superior option when compared to hotel accommodation.

Leeds accommodation for a city break.

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

This Winter why don’t you get down to Leeds to experience England’s third city? Leeds is a thriving Northern city with lots of new developments and a great night life. If you are planning on staying in Leeds then you would be hard pressed to find a better accommodation option than booking a Leeds serviced apartment.

Leeds is the 30th largest city in Europe and one of the biggest in the UK and has seen a lot of renovation and new buildings in the last decade during the successful reign of New Labour. As with most industrial Northern cities in the UK, the city saw a massive boom in size and population during the 19th century as Britain lead the world during the Industrial Revolution. Leeds profited greatly after the construction of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and the Aire & Calder Navigation and the building or railways from 1834 onwards.

Leeds was granted city status in 1893 which showed how it had grown to become one of the UK’s most important urban areas. And again, as with most northern industrial cities, much of the industry the city was built on has disappeared and been replaced by the service sector including retail, call centres, office and media jobs.

For those looking to stay in Leeds and stay over for a while, why not look at getting serviced apartment accommodation in Leeds? With lots of new residential buildings having been built in the last decade, Leeds has a good number of apartments that are available for short term bookings. These are a great alternative to traditional hotel accommodation, as you get much more space having the use of a whole apartment. So get in touch if you are planning a city break in Leeds and see what options you can get for Leeds serviced apartments.

Leeds University Graduation 2011 Accommodation

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

The dates have been announced for the July 2011 degree ceremonies at Leeds University, and this year they will take place between the 11th and the 22nd of July, and as always, the ceremonies take place in the Great Hall.

The Great Hall on the Leeds University campus is a grade II listed building which is over 100 hundred years old having been built in 1894. The Great Hall is a wonderful example of Gothic architecture and it also one of the building associated with the term ‘red brick university.’  Since then, the 6 civic universities founded around 1900 use this term, which are the University of Sheffield, the University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, the University of Liverpool, the University of Bristol and the University of Birmingham. The Great Hall is still used to today for graduation ceremonies as well as being used for exams, meetings and public lectures.

Graduation represents the peak of a student’s academic life; the moment when years of study and hard work come to fruition. University is a great experience, but it’s pretty useless without the qualifications at the end. However more often than not is it a prouder day for the parents of the students. Weeping mums and proud dads will fill the rafters watching their offspring graduate from University. Often when the parents or families are coming over they will be looking to stay a night or 2 to make the most of the trip, especially if they’re coming to Leeds from far away. The first option which the students might offer their parents is to crash on the couch in their student digs. Having been a student myself, I wouldn’t wish that night on anyone, especially family! So the next option to come to mind might be a hotel. However being stuck in a cramped hotel room for a couple of nights might not be the most appealing idea, so how about trying a serviced apartment in Leeds when travelling over for graduation ceremony?

A serviced apartment in Leeds can give you the luxury and service of staying in a hotel so you don’t have to worry about slumming it. An apartment has the massive advantage over a hotel though as you get so much more or your money in terms of space and facilities. In an apartment you get a fitted kitchen so you have the option of making your own meals. Even if this is just as simple as cheese on toast or popping a pizza in the oven! Also you have the space of a lounge area when you can relax and unwind, rather than being stuck in the four walls of a hotel room. Serviced City Pads have a good selection of accommodation in Leeds in our serviced apartments. Located around Leeds City Centre, all would be a great option when looking for accommodation for the 2011 graduation ceremonies at Leeds University.

International Jazz Conference at Leeds College of Music

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

April 7th and 8th 2011 will see the latest International Jazz Conference take place in Leeds. Ever since 1993 when the first conference took place the annual gathering has been well received by jazz enthusiasts, with people from all over the world coming to the Leeds College of Music to debate and discuss the latest developments (and maybe take in the odd jam session). It has been announced on the College of Music’s website that the main theme of this year’s conference will be ‘the under-explored subject of jazz composition, composing and composers’. Jazz composition can take in many diverse approaches – this humble blogger’s personal favourite is the spirit of improvisation that is distilled so perfectly in Miles Davis’ classic “Kind of Blue” – there’s a reason why this album is widely acknowledged as a classic.

However, when it comes to accommodation, we recommend that you avoid improvisation. Instead, just get in touch with us here at Serviced City Pads and we will find you somewhere to stay while you take in the conference. We have a number of apartments in Leeds who can accommodate you in one of their serviced apartments.

The apartments range from studio apartments that can sleep up to 2 people to larger 2 bedroom apartments that can accommodate 4 people. A serviced apartment is an affordable alternative to a traditional hotel room – they offer much more space and comfort at competitive rates. If you’re interested in a stay in a serviced apartment, then contact us here at Serviced City Pads and see what we can do for you!
