Manchester conference accommodation

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Manchester has now become something of a centre for conferences, with much of the emphasis on larger events that are held at Manchester Central. It shows how far the city has benefited from continuous investment over the past 15 years that it can now host the Labour Party Conference accommodation (September 26-30) and nobody sees it as much of a surprise. Everybody now assumes, quite rightly, that manchester can deliver such grand scale corporate events.

Apart from the Labour Party coming to Manchester, the 2010 conference season (which broadly runs through the Autumn period) sees other events such as Audacious 2010 (August 2 – 5 ); Property Abroad Show (September 3 – 5); UK Wedding Show (October 23/24); Mind Body and Spirit (November 19-21) being held at Manchester Central, amongst many other events in Manchester.

If you are involved with a conference in Manchester – whether you are visiting Manchester as a conference delegate or involved in the organisation and set up of the conference, then you will need to arrange some conference accommodation in Manchester. Staying in a hotel is great if it’s for a day, maybe it’s ok to stay in a hotel room for a couple of nights at a push but the space issues mean that staying in Manchester serviced apartment becomes more tempting for the visitor. If you add the value of meny aspect that a serviced apartment can offer (if you are staying in Manchester with a colleague, you can share a 2 bedroom serviced apartment and really start to see some considerable savings versus staying in a hotel in Manchester).

In terms of location, there are a number of serviced apartments within walking distance of Manchester Central, which will mean you should never need to take a taxi during your Manchester visit.

If staying in a serviced apartment manchester sounds like a good idea or something that you would like to know more about, then please call Serviced City Pads reservations on 0844 335 8866 – the serviced apartment booking specialist, with a team who have wide knowledge of Manchester city centre and the surrounding area.

Manchester Museum – Stay in a Serviced Apartment

Friday, June 25th, 2010

The first collections were assembled by the Manchester Society of Natural History, formed in 1821, and in 1850 the cellections of the Manchester Geological Society were added. Serviced City Pads.

Unfortunately by the 1860’s both societies encountered financial difficulties and, on the advice of the great evolutionary biologist Thomas Huxley, Owens College (now the University of Manchester) accepted responsibility for the collections in 1867. The college was then in Quay Street and the museum in Peter Street. The old museum was sold in 1875 after the college had moved to its new buildings in Oxford Street.

The college commissioned Alfred Waterhouse, the architect of London’s Natural History, to design a museum to house these collections for the benefit of students and the public site in Oxford Road (then Oxford Street). The Manchester Museum was opened to the public in 1888. At the time all the scientific departments of the college were immediatley adjacent.

Two subsequent extensions mirror the development of the collections. The 1912 pavilion was largely funded by Jesse Haworth, a local textile merchant, to the enthnographic collections acquired through excavations he had supported. The 1927 extension was built to house the ethnographic collections. The Gothic Revival street frontage which continues to the Whitworth Hall has been ingeniously integrated by three generations of the Waterhouse family. Serviced City Pads supply serviced apartments throughout central Manchester and Salford Quays.
The University Dental Hospital of Manchester once stood next to the museum:when it moved to the present hospital building the earlier one was used for scientific teaching and later still by Manchester Museum which still occupies it. Serviced City Pads serviced apartments.
In 1997 the Museum was awarded a £12.5 million grant for the Heritage Lottery Fund and this, together with the monies from the European Regional Development Fund, the University of Manchester, the Wellcome Trust, the Wolfson Fondation and other sponsors has enabled the museum to undertake the refurbishment and building which opened in 2003.

The major collecting areas in archaeology have been Western Europe (including the British Isles) the Mediterranean, Egypt and Western Asia. Large accessions of material from Egypt and Western Asia came from excavations of Sir Flinders Petrie and subsequent archaeologists for the University have been involved in several expeditions to Western Asia and brought more finds into the Museum. The Egyptological collections begin with the finds from Kahun and Garob, presented in 1890 by Jesse Haworth made a major donations of funds for this purpose. In more recent times the Egyptian material and Jesse Haworth made a major donation of funds for this purpose. In more recent times the Egyptian Mummy Research Project, begun in 1973, has yielded much information on health and social conditions in acient Egypt and radiology and endoscopy have beed used more extensively. A redesign of the galleries in 1984/85 resulted in much improved displays. Watch Manchester City – Stay in a Serviced Apartment

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Manchester City Football Club is an English Premier League football club who play at the City of Manchester Stadium. Serviced City Pads have a range of Serviced Apartments near the ground and are a great alternative to hotels with more space and can work out better value. Please contact Serviced City Pads on 0844 335 8866

City was founded in 1880 when the side was known as St Mark’s and changed it’s name to Manchester City in 1894. The clubs most successful period was in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when they won the League Championship, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup under the management team of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison and with players including Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee. Serviced City Pads supply Serviced Apartment Accommodation.

Since winning the League Cup in 1976, the club has failed to win any major honours. The clubs decline led to a relegation twice in three years in the 1990’s, spending the 1998-99 season in the third tier of English Football. The club has since regained top flight status, the level at which they have spent the majority of their history. Serviced City Pads are a Web based serviced apartment booking agent with 100’s of serviced apartments within the city centre of Manchester please contact the reservations team on 0844 335 8866.

In August 2008 the club was purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group. The takeover was immediatley followed by a flurry of bids for high profile players; the club broke the British  transfer record by signing Brazilian international Robinho from Real Madrid for £32.50 million. City reached tenth, and also reached the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup. During the summer of 2009 the club took transfer spending to an unprecendented level, with an outlay of over £100 million on players Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Joleon Lescott. On December 2009 it was announced that Mark Hughes had been replaced as manager by Roberto Mancini. City finished the season in fifth position in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on a place in the Champions League, and compete in the Europa League in season 2010-11.

The current club crest was adopted in 1997, a result of the previous crest being ineligible for the registration as a trademark. The badge was based on the arms of the city of Manchester, and consists of a shield in front of a golden eagle. The shield features a ship on its upper half representing the Manchester Ship Canal, and three diagonal stripes in the lower half, for the city’s three rivers. The bottom of the badge bears the motto Superbia in Proelio, which translates as Pride in Battle in Latin. Above the eagle the shield are three stars, which are purely decortative. Serviced City Pads have a reservations team who will send through a range of serviced apartments, please contact the team on 0844 335 8866.

Premier League fixtures for 2010/11 announced

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The fixture list for 2010/11 have just been announced and it already looks like a fasciniting season ahead for Liverpool and Manchester United.

After a disastrous season last year and now without a manager (Rafa Benitez was effectively sacked and has since moved to European champions Inter Milan), Liverpool – a club that many people feel is in turmoil as they plunge further into debt under the stwardship of their American owners – will be hoping for a better 2010/11 season. They start the season at home to Arsenal over the weekend of August 14th (some dates will change due to TV and this particular match looks a certainty to be shown on Sky Sports). Other early season opponents at Anfield include West Brom, Sunderland and Blackpool.

Manchester United lost out in the title race to a strong Chelsea side and many feel that Alex Ferguson hasn’t done enough to replace superstar winger Christiano Ronaldo. Many United supporters feel that Ferguson’s hands are tied, also because of another reviled American owner - The Glazer family – and are worried to see their club plunge further into debt. A takeover looks unlikely in the short term, although the campaigners wearing the Green and Gold scarves (the original colours worn by Manchester United) will hope to pour on the pressure and drive Glazer away from Old Trafford. Supporters are uneasy by the massive debt and inevitable challenge of neighbours Manchester City.

Manchester United start their premier league campaign with a tantalising match against newly promoted Newcastle United, with other early home games in Manchester against West Ham, Liverpool and Sunderland.

Serviced City Pads will be dealing with many supporters who follow both teams from afar. We find that there are many Manchester United fans who travel to Manchester from Southern Ireland and stay in Manchester for the weekend. The same applies to fans of Liverpool FC, but there are also a number of scandinavian fans who stay in Liverpool for 2 or 3 days either side of watching a premier league match.

As Serviced City Pads have now launched the SCP rewards club, it makes perfect sense to join the club now (it doesn’t cost anything) and then book your accommodation in Manchester for every home match throughout the season. You will be rewarded for every night accommodation that you book with us. To find out more click here

We also find that if you are a group wishing to stay in Manchester it makes better sense to stay in a Manchester serviced apartment rather than staying in a manchester hotel. The apartment option offers more space and means you can have a beer together as a group before you go out for the evening. It offers a more communal and less formal atmosphere than the 4 walls of a hotel room. A serviced apartment in manchester – for a group stay – will also generally work out to be better value for meny than booking a hotel in Manchester.

So if you are looking to book a short stay in Manchester, you should contact Serviced City Pads straight away. We are the specialist serviced apartment booking company with a wide range of great value serviced apartments in Manchester.

Will Manchester City forever stay in Manchester United shadow?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I was recently in a taxi after a business meeting in Manchester city centre. The driver happened to be a staunch Manchester United fan. He was sure that the rise and eventual dominance of Manchester City was nothing more than inevitable due to the club being bankrolled by the oil rich arabs from the UAE. It is a view shared by many, not just disgruntled anti Glazer campaigning Manchester cabbies.

There is no doubt that Manchester is a city that is passionate about football. It is also fair to suggest that City have lived in the shadows of their illustrious neighbours from Old Trafford. While Alex Ferguson has been piling trophies high, Man City have spent years being relegated and then promoted to and from the English Premier League.

It may well be that the tide is turning. Manchester City are now buying top class players like there is no tomorrow. They are improving every year and it would be no surprise to see the club qualifying from for the European Champions League in 2011 and challenging for homours after that. Success is never guaranteed but the arabs will not tolerate failure.

The local economy of Manchester is fuelled by many foreign supporters of Manchester United FC who visit Manchester from Scandanavia, Ireland and Iceland to watch their team. Many of these visitors will spend the weekend in Manchester (beer is much cheaper in the UK than in Denmark!) and stay in Manchester serviced apartments or hotels in Manchester. The hotel room is a great option if you there are a couple of you and you can make a reservation for a twin bedroom. The serviced apartment in Manchester city centre option offers something slightly different, something that a hotel room can’t; and that is all about accommodating a group of 6,7 or even 8 people who are visiting manchester together and want to stay togeher in the same apartment. Staying in a serviced apartment option mean that the group will be able to socialise and relax together as a group in a spacious living room, cook a meal together and watch tv together. This relaxing atmosphere isn’t something that the formal surroundings of a hotel – even if it is a Budget hotel in Manchester – can offer.

A large group staying in a serviced apartment in Manchester city centre will often find that they will also save money (per person) versus booking multiple hotel rooms. A group of 6 will have to book at least 3 rooms and who is to say that they will be next to eachother?

Anyway, with the emergence of manchester City as a force once again, we expect that more foreign Manchester City supporters will be looking to come and stay in manchester when their team plays at home - particularly supporters from the United Arab Emirates. We suggest that these visitors should consider staying in a short stay apartment and that one in the heart of Manchester city centre is the best option.

Take a look at www.servicedcitypads.com for a wide range of good value apartments for your holiday in Manchester.
