2011 Football Masters Final in Manchester - June 27th, 2011

Masters Football moves into its 11th year of existence in 2011 with the grand final taking place in Manchester’s MEN Arena for the first time. The ‘SELCO Builders Warehouse Masters Football Cup’ as it is known for sponsorship purposes is an increasingly popular tournament played every summer for ex and current professional footballers over the age of 35. For avid football fans it provides a chance for them to see their old favourites in action once again, albeit usually a little more stoutly then in their heyday. Regional heats are held around the country and the winners of those, plus the hosts, take part in the grand final. For the 2011 final Manchester United and Manchester City are the joint hosts. So far Glasgow Rangers, Leeds United and Liverpool have qualified from their regionals to join the 2 Manchester teams, the other places will be decided over the coming weeks in the regional heats.

For fans of 90s/early 00s football, reading some of the team sheets will certainly bring a wave of giddy nostalgia your way. Just to whet the appetite of the reader, some of the past stars that are strutting their stuff in the tournament include; Mark Crossley, Muzzy Izzet, Regi Blinker, Patrick Berger, Daniel Amokachi, Darren Huckerby, Dean Windass, Efan Ekoku, Kevin Pressman, Ray Parlour, Tore Andre Flo and John Barnes! Usually the only chance a fan gets to see retired professionals/ former heroes kicking around a football is in low-tempo, virtually meaningless testimonials or charity matches. However if you think the Masters Football is of a similar laid-back nature then think again. These former professionals do not like losing and many still want to prove to the fans, and ultimately themselves, that they still have the what it takes when they are put on the football pitch.

Manchester will provide an excellent backdrop to the final and has become used to hosting high profile events in the last decade or so.
