What’s going on in Liverpool during August? - August 1st, 2008

MUSIC Gig of the month is The Script at the Liverpool Carling Academy on Sunday August 10th. Described as “Timbaland meets U2”, the band have cemented their status as one of the hottest acts around having already supported N*E*R*D at Carling Academy Brixton and joined The Hoosiers on tour. Other bands at Carling Academy 2 this month are the Pink Floyd tribute act Crazy Diamond on Saturday August 9th, My Auntie Sam on Saturday 16th, Just Another Band on Friday 29th and The Gutter Twins on August 30th.   Also over the bank holiday, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August sees the annual dance festival Creamfields. Originally based in Liverpool, this year it will be down the road in Daresbury, Cheshire. With over 100 DJ’s, over 25 live acts, festival exclusives and one of the freshest most diverse line ups you’ll see this summer, Creamfields has succeeded in breaking a new era for dance festivals. Creamfields was the first ever dance festival, beginning life in 1998 and over the last decade has kept its crown as the UK’s number 1, it has never strived to be the biggest just the best and this year it will be THE festival of the Summer. SPORT  Everton’s 2007/08 campaign ended in a fifth place finish and a return to the Uefa Cup. There were plenty of positives to take from the season as the Toffees made a real impact on the Uefa Cup, the Premier League and the Carling Cup. The league campaign had Everton mounting a real tilt at fourth place right up until the end of March, and they also reached the semi-final of the league cup before losing out over two legs to Chelsea. Everton kick off the new season playing Blackburn at home, if you’re visiting Liverpool for this or the game against Portsmouth on the 30th, why not stay over in one of Serviced City Pads quality apartments and enjoy a weekend in the city. Also in August The World Firefighter Games come to Liverpool and will see a hive of activity taking place in and around the Liverpool Echo Arena. The Games are being staged by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service from August 24 to September 2, 2008, and will be a real highlight of the city’s Capital of Culture year. More than 5,000 competitors from across the world are expected to arrive in the city for the 10-day spectacle, and this diverse range of categories means there’ll be something to suit all levels and abilities. (www.liverpoolempire.org.uk)ENTERTAINMENT On August 15th Liverpool Unites- A Concert for Rhys Jones, is the idea of family friends who wanted to do something spectacular to remember Rhys. Money raised from the concert will go to the Liverpool Unites campaign, which is currently raising money for the Rhys Jones memorial fund.  The fund hopes to raise enough to build a community centre in honour of the 11-year-old on the Croxteth Park estate where he grew up. It is now the largest free annual music event in Europe and with four days of live performance featuring move than 75 bands this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever (www.mathewstreetfestival.com). COMEDY  For the summer season 2008 and beyond, Rawhide has moved to the Downstairs Bar at Royal Court Liverpool which has recently been restored to its 1930’s glory. Rawhide is as busy as ever this month when Friday 15th & Saturday 16th sees Steve Best, Mary Bourke, Mike Wilkinson & Chris Cairns taking the stage, and Friday 29th & Saturday 30th features the hilarious Roger D, Duncan Oakley, Phil Walker & Brendan Riley. www.royalcourtliverpool.co.uk/rawhide
