Sheffield Serviced Apartments Out & About
The city of Sheffield is home to over 500,000 people, and takes its name from the river which passes through it, the River Sheaf. The city is perhaps most famous for steel production. It was the steel industry which drove Sheffield's development in the 19th century, during the peak of the Industrial Revolution. During this golden period Sheffield expanded and developed into the modern city we have today. The population increased massively, as the city became a key industrial centre. However, Sheffield's steel and iron industries declined in the 1970s and 1980s due to international competition. This, allied with the decline of coal mining, led to some very tough times for the city. Thankfully, recent decades have seen extensive redevelopment and economic growth in Sheffield, and it is once again a city on the up.
Music:
Sheffield has given us many great bands and artists, from the Human League and ABC to Pulp and the Arctic Monkeys. The much respected label Warp Records, home to artists as diverse as the Aphex Twin and Grizzly Bear, also calls Sheffield home. As you would expect from a city with such a rich musical history, there is no shortage of music venues in which you can catch a live act or two. Here are just a couple of examples:
Corporation, 2 Milton Street - 0114 276 0262

Theatre:
Sheffield is a great place for anyone with an interest in performing arts. It has two main theatres, the Crucible Theatre and the Lyceum Theatre, and there are also plenty of smaller venues across the city.
The Crucible Theatre & The Lyceum Theatre, 55 Norfolk Street - 0114 249 6000
Sport:
As anyone with even a passing interest in sport will be aware, Sheffield is home to two big football teams. Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United are both (at the time of writing) in League One.
Sheffield Wednesday are the older of the two teams, having been founded in 1867. They are nicknamed "The Owls" and "The Wednesday" and play their home matches at the Hillsborough Stadium. They are one of the founding members of the English Premier League, but they were not able to keep their place in it, as they were relegated in 2000. However, despite the setbacks of recent years, the Owls seem to be on an even keel once again and are looking to climb back up the league pyramid.
Sheffield United were founded in 1889, and are nicknamed "The Blades" due to Sheffield's association with the steel industry. Like their city counterparts, The Blades have also endured difficult times recently. They were relegated from the Premier League in 2006 and are currently in League One.
Restaurants:
There are plenty of great places to grab a bite to eat in Sheffield. The city has many fine restaurants in the city centre. Here are just a few examples:
